New Yorkers can enjoy Caribbean-like fun in the sun right here in the states

As New Yorkers deal with the mind-numbing cold, the idea of traveling someplace warm and tropical probably couldn't be more appealing. While flights to the Caribbean are relatively short, the cost of travel and the added hassle of flying internationally (everyone - even infants - needs a passport!) puts some vacationers off.
That makes Caribbean-like vacations in the U.S. - fun and sun closer to home and at a discount - very appealing. It's not hard to find New Yorkers trolling the beaches of Jacksonville or Sarasota, Fla., the Florida Keys or Myrtle Beach, S.C. It may not be warm enough to merit sun block, but you won't need layers of gloves
Unlike Orlando, which offers glittering theme parks, chain hotels and no oceanfront property, Sarasota is a much less commercial destination with several beautiful - and public - beaches. The Florida Keys are famous for their low-rise resorts and hotels.
"When we arrived at the Hawk's Cay Island Resort in Duck Key, Fla., we were surprised to see a sign that said, 'Welcome to Paradise.' As New Yorkers, we were skeptical. But we were blown away by the fantastic amenities, and the phenomenal activities for our children," said Sarah Motyl, a 45-year-old former ballet dancer who lives with her husband and three kids on the Upper East Side. Even closer to New York than Florida is Myrtle Beach. You won't hear as many Caribbean accents, but you will find a variety of resorts and hotels, restaurants and beaches at a fraction of the cost of a Caribbean vacation.
"My boyfriend and I have traveled to Myrtle Beach for several vacations, instead of Florida or the Caribbean, because of the convenience and lower costs," said Robin Lipner, a graphic artist who lives and works in Chelsea. Even during peak vacation periods, Lipner said she prefers heading to Myrtle Beach because of the availability of short, nonstop flights, and because it doesn't typically attract as many tourists.
"To plan my trips there, I rely on the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Web site. It lists everything happening in the area, plus promotes discounts and specials for visitors," Lipner said. "The beaches in Myrtle Beach may not be as surf-oriented as Florida beaches, but I think they're just as beautiful. The waves are more mild," she added.
